Top 5 Dog Movies to Binge-Watch this Holiday Season

Is it really December already? This year has both screamed by and felt like a decade all at the same time. Weird. Well, with the holiday season here, the kids will soon be home from school...or are still home from school, most of your shopping is being done online, and you’re running out of programs to binge-watch on Netflix. Ready for a challenge?

Here are my top five favorite dog movies of all time that you can watch with the whole family! So, pop some popcorn, grab some tissues, and snuggle up with your four-legged family members (mine is always close by when popcorn is involved). :) I challenge you to watch all of these movies before we bid farewell...or should I say “good riddance” to 2020. Enjoy!

#1 “My Dog Skip”

Released in 2000

Rated PG

Starring Kevin Bacon and Diane Lane

Available on Amazon Prime

Set in Mississippi in the 1940’s, this is a story about a shy boy who overcomes his fears with the help of his dog, a Jack Russell Terrier named Skip. This is truly a heartwarming story based on Willis Morris’s best-selling memoir.

FUN FACT: There were six Jack Russell Terriers who played “Skip”, and one of the terriers was the well-known dog, Moose, who played “Eddie” on the T.V. sitcom Frasier.

Tissue Alert: Keep the whole box nearby

#2 “Because of Winn-Dixie”

Released in 2005

Rated PG

Starring AnnaSophia Robb, Jeff Daniels & Cicely Tyson

Available on Amazon Prime

After moving to a new town, Opal, a young girl who is lonely and trying to find her place in her new community, befriends a gregarious stray Picardy Shepherd at the Winn-Dixie store. Opal and the dog become best friends with an unbreakable bond who find their way together while learning many life lessons along the way. Another tear-jerker!

#3 “A Dog’s Purpose”

Released in 2017

Rated PG

Starring Josh Gad & Dennis Quaid

Available on Amazon Prime

This story is told from the perspective of the dog, who tries to make sense of the humans in his life while attempting to discover and fulfill his purpose. His journey begins as a puppy as he describes the sights, smells and fears of being so little in a big world and continues as he grows older and is part of a family who loves him. This moving film illustrates the deep bond between dogs and their people. If you haven’t seen this movie (or read the book), I highly recommend that you add it to your short list! Yes...tissues required.

#4 “Marley & Me”

Released in 2008

Rated PG

Starring Owen Wilson & Jennifer Aniston

Available on Amazon Prime

Based on the autobiography by journalist, John Grogan, this is the story about the adventures...and misadventures of a young couple and their new Labrador Retriever, Marley. The antics and trouble caused by Marley is outshone by his sweetness and undying love for the couple. This is a heartwarming movie and, of course, keep those tissues handy and be ready to hug your pets! Are there any dog movies that don’t make me laugh one minute and sob the next?

#5 "Where the Red Fern Grows”

Released in 1974 and 2003

Rated G

Available on Amazon Prime

Based on the novel by Wilson Rawls, this is a classic coming of age story about a boy and his hunting dogs. I read this book in grade school and it became one of my favorite stories. While the 1974 film is dated, the story of the bond and friendship between the boy and his hunting dogs transcends time. If you have ever loved a pet (and if you’re reading this, I’m guessing that you have), then you will appreciate the adventures and heartache experienced by the main character. A hidden gem!

Did any of these movies strike a chord? Have a favorite of your own that you’d like to add? I'd love to hear from you!
