What Does Building a House Have to Do with Pet Photography Pricing?

My husband and I are officially in the planning phase of building a new home here in Southeastern Wisconsin, with construction happening within the year. It’s an exciting season — lots of decisions, model home visits, and real conversations with builders about timelines and investment.

As we’ve gone through the process, something really stood out.

The builders we feel most comfortable with are the ones who share real numbers early — ideally right on their website.

Not because we’re looking for the cheapest option. But because we want clarity. We want to understand what we’re stepping into before investing a lot of time, energy, and emotion.

That perspective has shaped some meaningful updates in my own business.

If you’ve been considering a session — or you’re simply curious what’s changing — keep reading.

The Problem With “Base Price” Conversations

If you’ve ever looked into building a home, you know that the base price is rarely the final price.

  • There’s the lot.

  • Site preparation.

  • Upgrades shown in the model home.

  • Driveways, landscaping, and finishing details.

Photography can feel similar. A session fee may get things started, but finished artwork, albums, framing, and digital files often come later. Without clear context, it’s hard to understand the total investment.

And, as someone going through this decision-making process myself right now, I understand how frustrating that can feel.

Transparency Builds Trust

What we’ve learned so far is that we’re not opposed to investing (within our budget) in something we value.

What we want is clarity.

When a builder shares realistic numbers early, it builds confidence. Even if the investment is higher than another option, we can decide whether it’s worth continuing the conversation.

That same principle applies to how I structure my pet photography experience.

Why I Share My Pricing Upfront

I believe clients deserve to know what their pet photography experience will cost before reaching out.

That’s why my pricing is clearly shared upfront — not revealed after a session or buried deep in a sales conversation. You’ll find clear information about the experience, what’s included, and what kind of finished artwork to expect.

This approach helps ensure that when we connect, we’re already aligned.

It’s not about limiting options.

It’s about setting expectations and creating a smoother, more enjoyable experience from the start. If the experience and pricing feel right, we can move forward confidently. If not, there’s no pressure — and no time wasted on either side.

Experience Matters — Especially When Photographing Dogs

One important difference between building a home and photographing dogs is that my “project” involves living, breathing animals.

My background in dog training and behavior is built into every session. It allows me to work thoughtfully with shy dogs, high-energy dogs, seniors, rescues, and dogs who need a little extra patience.

That expertise is part of the experience you’re investing innot an add-on, and not something tacked on later.

Just like a well-built home, the goal isn’t something that simply looks good on day one. It’s artwork that holds meaning and value for years to come.

The Bottom Line

Clear pricing is about respect.  It respects your time, your budget, and your ability to decide what matters most to you.

As a dog photographer based in Waukesha and serving the Milwaukee metro area, I want pet parents to feel confident and informed before they ever reach out. That’s why sharing my pricing upfront and clearly outlining what’s included is important in creating an experience that feels straightforward, thoughtful, and intentional — from the very first click to the finished artwork on your wall.

If that approach resonates with you, we’re likely a great fit.

What’s Changed?

  • With our move on the horizon, in-home studio sessions are currently on hold (I’ll be sharing more soon about future studio plans).

  • Outdoor sessions throughout Southeastern Wisconsin continue as usual

  • The experience has become even simpler: gallery viewing and artwork ordering now happen from the comfort of your own home.

And just as important — pricing has been adjusted.

I’ve lowered my prices to create a more approachable starting point while still delivering the same thoughtful, guided experience and handcrafted artwork I’m known for.

  • Clear structure

  • Clear investment

  • No guesswork

Because whether you’re building a home or creating artwork for the one you already love, you deserve to know what you’re signing up for.

  • My work is designed around creating finished artwork. While digital files are included, the experience is built to help you walk away with something tangible — not just images sitting on a hard drive.

    2. Select a package and download your included digital files.

    3. Create your artwork in the virtual store.

All from the comfort of your own home! Your selected artwork will be delivered to your door.
